Students

Our goal is for all young people to achieve their potential. We raise young people’s aspirations to complete their education and secure employment. Our work includes scholarships for motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds, preparing students for secondary education and developing interactive educational resources.

The Kusuma Excellence Fellowship (KEF) offers 200 scholarships each year to students from disadvantaged backgrounds in Sambalpur and Hardoi to complete secondary school and pursue higher education. The Fellowship includes a stipend, mentoring support, English and computer training, life skills development and career guidance. Each Fellow is supported with mentoring sessions to develop an individual plan of action that includes academic and personal development goals. KEF has supported 887 Fellows to pursue their education.

Many students are not adequately prepared for secondary school and have not achieved the required learning level. Our Secondary School Readiness Programme (SSRP) delivers accelerated learning to students in classes 9 and 10 to address learning gaps in Mathematics, English, Science, Hindi, Odia and Social Sciences. The programme includes a study camp at the beginning and end of the academic year and a period of supported-learning during the school term. Teachers deliver tailored classroom sessions based on each student’s learning level. Students are assessed at the beginning and end of each year to track their progress.

Students are provided with subject-specific high quality learning materials and facilities such as Science and computer laboratories and libraries to enhance learning.

We implement SSRP intensively in 50 schools and partner with UP State government to deliver the programme to 52 additional schools reaching over 5,200 students in five Districts. The SSRP material developed by Kusuma for Hindi and Mathematics is being used statewide by UPMSA.
